US drug and consumer goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble(P&G) on Tuesday said that it has discontinued the manufacture and selling of the popular Vicks Action 500 following a regulation by the health ministry banning combination drugs.

The ban came in place after a panel of experts appointed by the government found “no therapeutic justification” on their usage.

According to a Reuters report, the medicine is a fixed dose combination of paracetamol, phenylephrine and caffeine.

The company declared that its products are approved by government regulators in 60 countries and enjoys safety record and are backed by research to support their quality.

Vicks has been used by Indians for more than three decades as a cure for sore throat and common cold.

The New Indian Express in an earlier report in September 2014 said that Vicks was one of the medicines sold in India which are banned in some countries.
