In a historic ruling, the US Supreme Court has made same-sex marriages legal across the country.

Five of the nine court justices determined that the right to marriage equality was enshrined under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. With the verdict same-sex marriages will be legal in all 50 states, currently they are legal in 37.

“The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity. The petitioners in these cases seek to find that liberty by marrying someone of the same sex and having their marriages deemed lawful on the same terms and conditions as marriages between persons of the opposite sex,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Even as news of the Supreme Court's ruling was met with jubiliation by LGBT groups, activists and citizens who have rallied for the cause, the White House put up this picture on Facebook. A picture with rainbow colors, which has been associated with the LGBT movement worldver.
