Is the term 'Black Money' racist? Well, the TMC and the CPI(M) think so

Written by : TNM

Members of the TMC and the CPI(M) found common ground in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday while agreeing that the term “black money” is racist. According to a report in The Indian Express, members of the two rival political parties said that the term should be changed. Speaking in a discussion on the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Bill, 2015, Derek O’Brien of the TMC said that the term should instead be called “dirty money”. O’Brien reportedly traced the etymology of the term, stating that it was coined in Europe several centuries ago. He added that coins which contained copper appeared black, and hence were called black money.CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury also underlined the fact and said that the term was racist and should be changed.Read more at: Term ‘black money’ sounds racist to Trinamool, CPM MPs
