‘Biriyani’ or ‘Biryani’, whatever the spelling might be, reigned supreme for the ninth consecutive year, according to Swiggy, one of the country’s leading food delivery platforms. Swiggy called biriyani as the “undisputed King of food kingdom in the country”. Looking back at the data for orders placed from January to November 2024, the platform said that 83 million orders of biriyani were placed across India — 158 plates every minute or or roughly two biriyanis every second. Further, 23 million dosa orders were also placed.
Orders were mostly placed at dinner time, accounting for 215 million orders, a 29% rise over lunch. Bengaluru stood out for its unique food indulgences, with a diner spending Rs 49,900 on a pasta spree and another splurging Rs 3 lakh on a single restaurant bill.
Snacks also had their moment, with chicken rolls leading the pack at 2.48 million orders. Midnight cravings peaked with 1.84 million chicken burgers ordered between 12–2 AM. A Delhi user took things to the next level with a jaw-dropping single order of 250 onion pizzas.
Swiggy’s 10-minute Bolt deliveries became a game-changer, satisfying cravings at record speeds. October 20 saw Bengaluru place a record 19,177 Bolt orders in a single day. Delivery partners of Swiggy travelled 1.96 billion kilometers - the distance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari 533 thousand times. Kapil Kumar Pandey from Mumbai delivered 10,703 orders this year, while Kaleeswari M from Coimbatore led the female partners with 6,658 orders.
Swiggy Dineout helped 22 million diners save Rs 533 crore in 2024. Delhi emerged as the city with the highest savings, while Bengaluru dominated the party and romance scenes with nearly 2,89,000 alcohol transactions and 4,86,000 romantic bookings.
With delivery partners clocking 1.96 billion kilometers and innovations reshaping how India eats, the report states 2024 proved to be a milestone year for Swiggy.
