With just one day to go for filing of nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka, frantic negotiations are underway in the Congress unit.

Four seats from Karnataka go to polls on June 19. Prabhakar Kore of the BJP has already filed his nomination papers. Until recently, senior leader and former Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna was a sure shot, but the party is reportedly considering nominating Congress spokesperson Rajeev Gowda and B K Hariprasad.

On Saturday, rumours were doing the rounds that S M Krishna’s age was a reason the party was reluctant to nominate him and was considering two others. After this, Krishna’s supporters said that he would resign from the party if he was not nominated.

Krishna however, told reporters that he was not going to quit the party. But Congress sources told The News Minute that he had strongly protested the Congress high command’s possible decision to nominate someone else.

A Congress leader in Karnataka told The News Minute that Krishna’s age was a factor that militated against his appointment, but that the senior leader was not ready to accept it. Other sources have said that S M Krishna is not out of the race yet. His son-in-law V G Siddhartha, owner of the Café Coffe Day chain of coffee shops, is reportedly pulling some strings and its anyone’s guess who the Congress will nominate on Monday.
