The Delhi Police killed a man who was wanted in several cases in an encounter at a restaurant on Saturday evening. The police have said that Manoj Awasthi pulled a gun at them when cornered but his family members have alleged that the encounter was “fake”.According to a report in The Indian Express, the incident took place at 8:30pm Awasthi is said to have links with a political party and was accused of eight cases of fraud and had a reward of Rs 50,000 in his name if arrested.The police reportedly said that Awasthi had been on the run for a the past several months and that the Special Cell got information that he would be at the Sagar Ratna restaurant for a meeting at 8:30 p.m. On seeing the policemen, Awasthi is said to have taken out his gun and fired. The police reportedly fired in retaliation and Awasthi was killed.Awasthi suffered four bullet wounds and was declared dead when brought in at a hospital. According to The Times of India, a case of murder has been registered and a magisterial inquiry is said to be underway. "We will follow all the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court for such situations," a senior police officer told the newspaper.The TOI report mentions that Manoj is said to have fired at the cops, according to witnesses. Five of his who were present reportedly fled the spot.Police have said that Manoj and his wife Priyanka are part of a manpower racket.The IE report adds that his family has asked for CCTV footage of the encounter, alleging that it was “fake”.
