Former BJP member and senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani wrote to Congress President Sonia Gandhi offering to defend her and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, The Times of India reported.

The report states that on December 11, just two days after the Delhi High Court dismissed Sonia and Rahul Gandhi's plea to quash the summons issued by a trial court in the National Herald case, Jethmalani wrote to Sonia Gandhi stating, “I know you have many great lawyers in the party. Still, my services are available to you if you need."

He also told her that he would not charge any fee for his legal aid in the case filed by BJP leader and arch-rival Subramanian Swamy. 

The TOI report further states, "Jethmalani said he was convinced the Gandhis had done no wrong and was ready to defend them in the trial court for free. He attempted to prove his bona fide by saying his actions were always driven by clean politics and he was not happy with what was happening in Rajya Sabha despite the Gandhis having done no wrong. Jethmalani said he had no reason to doubt that 'the charges against them were false and malicious'. He tried to impress the Gandhis by reminding them about his role 'in the recent Bihar elections'.”

When Jethmalani did not receive a prompt response from the Congress President, he shot off another letter on December 12. This time he did receive a response which was only a mere acknowledgement of his first letter.

Jethmalani will also represent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP members against the defamation suits filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
