Cairo : Qatar pledged $1 billion for reconstructing the Gaza Strip, which was battered in 50-day-long conflict with Israel, at an international donors' conference here Sunday.

"The state of Qatar announces its participation with an amount of $1 billion for the reconstruction of Gaza," Qatari Foreign Minister Khaled Al Attiya said at the conference, reported Xinhua.

Both Kuwait and the UAE also announced to each provide Gaza with $200 million in aid.

Earlier Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry announced additional $212 million in assistance to the Palestinian people for rebuilding Gaza, following a previous $118 million humanitarian aid to the enclave in July and August when the conflict was raging.

The Palestinian authority asked for $4 billion to reconstruct the strip that has been devastated by Israel's offensive.

Nearly 2,200 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed in the war, while attacks by Gaza militants also killed 73 on the Israeli side, mostly soldiers. More than 100,000 Palestinian people were left homeless.
