The News Minute | August 29, 2014 | 10:12 am ISTFive students from Jammu and Kashmir quit their engineering college in Punjab after a brawl between two student groups over alleged cheering for the Pakistan while watching a cricket match on TV, states a report by Indian Express. The incident is said to have taken place in the hostel of Swami Parmanand College of Engineering and Technology on Tuesday night during a Pakistan-Sri Lanka one-day match. Some hostel property was vandalised and 12 students from both groups were injured, an eyewitness told Indian Express. Following the incident the students from Jammu and Kashmir quit the college and left for their homes. The college has been closed until September 8, and students have been asked to vacate the hostel. The report also adds that the college authorities have denied that the fight was "due to ‘pro-Pakistan’ or ‘anti-India’ slogans" and blamed local political parties and media of magnifying the issue unnecessarily. College authorities have filed a complaint with the police without naming any person, and themselves are looking into the issue as well.
