The News Minute| November 27, 2014| 5.11 pm ISTPhilip Hughes, the Australian cricketer who was struck on the temple by a cricket ball during a test match against New South Wales, two days back. The 25 year-old cricketer tragically died in a hospital in Sydney today, three days shy of his 26th birthday. This is, however, not the first time that the world has witnessed freak occurrences of death on the cricket pitch. Here is a list of cricketers who passed away due to cricket injuries on the pitch:1. Raman Lamba: Perhaps the first cricketer who comes to mind when one thinks of Hughes’ death. The 38-year-old died after accidently being hit on the temple with a cricket ball during a match. He passed away due to an internal hemorrhage in 1998. 2. Ian Folley: This English cricketer passed away after being hit under the eye during a match. When he was rushed to the hospital, he suffered a heart attack under anesthesia and died on the spot. He was 30 years old. 3. Zulfiqar Bhatti: A Pakistani cricketer who hadn’t seen the limelight yet, died in December of 2013 after a ball hit him square in the chest during a match. The 22-year-old promising cricketer died on the pitch while playing against a local club. 4. Abdul Aziz: A Pakistani cricketer, this young cricketer died in 1959, after being struck by a ball over the heart. Aziz collapsed on the pitch and died on the way to the hospital. Even though he was wearing his helmet, the 32-year-old passed out and health officials were unable to revive him.
