Penalty for call drops valid, to be effective from January 1: TRAI tells telecom operators

Written by : TNM

Come January and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will start imposing fines on telecom operators offering poor services that result in call drops, reported The Times of India.

In a meeting on Thursday with CEO's of mobile companies, the TRAI said that its order on penalty- of Re 1 per call dropped for up to three calls a day- is valid and will come to effect from January 1, 2016, a move that telecom operators have been opposing for a while now.

TRAI chief R S Sharma said that the regulator will also make public the names of operators who provide poor services and also the areas where network coverage is worst. It said that it was doing it "not to expose" any operator but to ensure better quality services being provided to customers.

The TOI report further states, "This exercise would begin from a limited number of cities and then be expanded pan-India in a phased manner. The information will be shared with the public through a new website, a link to which will be provided on the home page of Trai."

"An impression is being created that the authority has imposed this regulation without considering the technical feasibility of its operation. Before issuing regulation, the authority has considered all aspects of the matter, including technical feasibility," The Hindu quotes Sharma as saying.
