A comprehensive study recently released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has found that an estimated 19.3% of women and 1.7% of men have been raped during their lifetimes in the United States of America.

The survey says one in five women in America were raped, and not just during their time in college.

Titled, ‘Prevalence and Characteristics of Sexual Violence, Stalking, and Intimate Partner Violence Victimization — National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, United States, 2011’, the survey was conducted in 50 states and the District of Columbia; in 2011 and surveyed around 14,000 people.

The survey paints a grim picture with its findings that an estimated 43.9% of women and 23.4% of men experienced other forms of sexual violence during their lifetimes, including being made to penetrate, sexual coercion, unwanted sexual contact, and noncontact unwanted sexual experiences.

The findings also show that woman from various race/ethnicités have been victims of sexual violence. In the United States, an estimated 32.3% of multiracial women, 27.5% of American Indian/Alaska Native women, 21.2% of non-Hispanic black women, 20.5% of non-Hispanic white women, and 13.6% of Hispanic women were raped during their lifetimes, it says.
