No, you were not the only one on the planet who was getting ticked-off because you were not able to send or receive WhatsApp messages on New Year's Eve. And no, you weren’t so high that you were imagining things, WhatsApp really was not working on Thursday night for several people across the world.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has acknowledged the issue.

An email from WhatsApp reportedly said that WhatsApp users around the globe were reporting problems connecting to the popular messaging service. The outage began around 8AM IST but was initially reported by users in Europe. Indian users started facing problems by 11 30AM.

"Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp today," an emailed statement said, "We’re working to restore service back to 100% for everyone and we apologize for the inconvenience." WhatsApp services were restored at 2AM IST.

The messaging service would have seen a massive spike in traffic on New Year’s Eve. Many users took to social media to complain about the downtime.
