The News Minute | July 24, 2014 | 5.17 pm ISTNearly 6,000 overseas Indians are imprisoned in 73 countries, according to data provided by the Ministry of External Affairs.According to the data released by the ministry, over 73 people died in various jails abroad and the remains were transported to India or disposed off by local authorities abroad, according to the wishes of the family.As many as 1,400 Indians are in prisons in Saudi Arabia, the highest for any country, followed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 985 and Pakistan with 468. Prisoners in Pakistan include 217 civil prisoners according to the High Commission of India in Pakistan.Countries such as UK, China, Singapore, USA, Nepal Malaysia, Kuwait, Italy, Bangladesh have over 100 prisoners. But while all these countries are known to have significant Indian populations, many countries such as Romania, Brunei, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cuba, Ethiopia, Fiji, Jamaica, Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico have one or two Indian people in their jails.The data provided by the MEA does not include the charges for which these people have been arrested.
