Two years after ace Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni retired from Test cricket, the star sportsman has decided to step down as the captain of the T20 and ODI Indian cricket teams.

A press release from the BCCI stated that Dhoni has informed the sports body that he wishes to step down as the captain in both the formats.

Currently, he is the most successful T20 captain with a little more than 40 victories at a remarkable winning rate of 60% in 71 matches. 

The release further said that he will be available for selection for the Paytm One Day Trophy and Paytm T20I Trophy against England and that the same has been conveyed to the Senior Selection Committee.

Rahul Johri, Chief Executive Officer of the BCCI said, "On behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats. Under his leadership, the Indian team touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket."

MS Dhoni holds several records in captaincy, including most wins by an Indian captain in Tests and ODIs, and most back-to-back wins by an Indian captain in ODIs. Under him, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011.

He is one of the most successful wicket-keeper batsmen the game has ever seen and has hit the highest score in an ODI innings by a wicketkeeper. He also holds the record for having claimed the maximum number of stumpings across all three formats. 

He has a mass fan-base in Tamil Nadu as he was the captain of the IPL team Chennai Super Kings.

He has been awarded the Khel Ratna and the Padma Shri.
