Michael Phelps has won almost as many Olympic medals as a billion-strong India ever has

Written by : IANS

Ace US swimmer Michael Phelps won two more Olympic golds in Rio late on Tuesday, taking his total career medals tally in the Summer Games to 25 -- which is just one short of what India as a country has achieved since it started participating in 1900.

Phelps won the first gold of the day in the 200-metre butterfly, his favourite event, and then led his team to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay. In the 200-metre event he clocked 1:53.36, while in the relay, the team finished at 7:00.66.

Overall, the 31-year-old athlete has racked up 25 Olympic medals, 21 of them gold and two each of silver and bronze. In contrast, India's tally from the 33 Summer Games it has participated in is: Nine golds, six silvers and 11 bronze medals. Out of the nine golds, eight have come in a team discipline hockey while one has come in shooting.
