Melbourne: The World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Sunday broke the sport's attendance record with 93,013 people turning up to see Australia being crowned champions for the fifth time.

Australia beat New Zealand by seven wickets with 101 balls remaining.

Sunday’s total attendance surpassed the record achieved at the same venue 15 months ago when the first day of the Boxing Day Test attracted 91,112 people.

The previous One-Day International (ODI) record crowd was achieved in the 1992 World Cup when the iconic 'G' drew a crowd of 87,182 for the final between Pakistan and England.
