Fifty years after Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi became the first Indian artiste to perform at the United Nations General Assembly, music composer AR Rahman paid tribute to the legend at the UN on India’s 70th Independence Day.

Mesmerising leaders from across the world, Rahman sang his 1998 hit song “Dil se” among others.

Rahman together with the Sunshine Orchestra, made up of children from an underprivileged background honoured Subbulakshmi with some of her favourite numbers, including "Kurai Ondrum Illai".

The 'Mozart of Madras' also performed "Jai Ho", the song that won him an Academy Award for the 2008 film, "Slumdog Millionaire"

2016 also happens to be the centenary year of Subbulakshmi’s birth anniversary and to commemorate occasion, the Indian mission to the UN is organising a cultural extravaganza. The Indian mission is also organising a photo exhibition of rare portraits of the Carnatic singer from August 15 to August 19.
