Written by : TNM Staff

Folk singer and activist Kovan on Thursday joined in the protest against the JNU incident by asserting that whether it is Afzal Guru or any other issue, it is a matter of freedom of expression.

“We are against curbing of freedom of speech and expression and we are against BJP' move to saffronise educational institutions,” Kovan said.

Shouting slogans against BJP and RSS, he alleged that the government was trying to suppress dissent and other voices.

“‪We want all charges against Kanhaiya to be dropped,” he added.

“On Afzal Guru, we are not discussing whether he is anti national or not, but what we are talking about is freedom of expression.”

Ganesan, state coordinator said, “‪BJP government is trying to silence the voice of dissent as they are trying to saffronise and privatize educational institutions.”

“‪Nothing has been proved against Afzal Guru but still he was hanged. So we are against his hanging.”

‪On whether Afzal guru is a terrorist or not, he said that's not an issue here.

Kovan has been detained by the police.

In October 2015, Kovan was arrested for sedition by the Tamil Nadu government after he released a song on alcoholism in the state and pointed fingers at Jayalalithaa for the same.
