The Patiala House Court in the national capital on Friday granted bail to two JNU students Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid who were arrested on charges of sedition.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh granted the bail plea of Umar and Anirban on a surety amount of Rs 25,000 each.

 The duo was arrested along with JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar for allegedly raising anti-national slogans in the varsity campus on February 9.

This comes after the Delhi police counsel opposed their bail plea claiming they had independent witnesses supporting their cliam.

On Wednesday, a high-level probe panel of JNU had found two students - Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya- "guilty" of arousing communal, caste or regional feeling or creating disharmony among students and were served show-cause notices.

While Kanhaiya was released on bail from Tihar on March 3, Umar and Anirban were kept in judicial custody.

The two students had surrendered on February 23 and had been in jail since then.  

Meanwhile, ex-DU professor SAR Geelani’s bail hearing was deferred till Saturday, as the public prosecutor stated he was unable to argue the case since he had not yet seen a copy of the professor's bail application.

Geelani has also been arrested on charges of sedition, after "anti-national" slogans were allegedly raised at an event he organised at the Press Club in Delhi.
