Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's counsel in the disproportionate assets case, L. Nageswara Rao has been recommended for appointment as Supreme Court judge by the Supreme Court Collegium.

Rao served as Additional Solicitor General in the Supreme Court for the UPA-II and NDA governments before resigning.

Rao is also representing the Tamil Nadu government in raising objections against the conduct of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test in 2016-17.

Besides Rao, the collegium has also proposed the names of Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, Allahabad High Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, and Kerala High Court Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan for appointment as Supreme Court judges.

Justice Amitava Rao was the last to be appointed to the Supreme Court in February 2015.

These appointments to the Supreme Court would be the first since the collegium system of judicial appointments was brought back.
