The much discussed Janata Parivar merger will not take place before the Bihar elections due to "technical problems", said Samajwadi Party national General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav on Tuesday. He also said that merging now would be like signing the “death warrant” of his party.NDTV quoted Yadav as saying, “The problem is that if a political party tells the Election Commission that they are going to merge and form a new party, then the original name and symbols of the party will be frozen. The Bihar elections are near and the merger cannot be done in a hurry." He further said that all parties merging into the Janata Parivar will have to give in writing to the Election Commission that they are not independent parties anymore. This will lead to the freezing of their original name and the party symbol.As this will confuse the voters in Bihar, he said the better option would be for the two parties, RJD and JDU, to fight the elections together under a seat-sharing arrangement.In contradiction to Ram Gopal Yadav, JD(U) President Sharad Yadav, who is known to be pro-merger, said the parties have already merged with Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav as the head.Ram Gopal Yadav’s comments bring to light the discord within SP with regard to the merger as many party leaders believe that the merger will only help strengthen JDU and RJD’s base in Bihar. And with the Samajwadi Party being a UP based party, it will gain nothing. Instead they might lose their party symbol and their identity in UP, which they have grown over the years, a report in Hindustan Times said.Six parties- the Samajwadi Party, the JD(U), Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (Secular), the Indian National Lok Dal and the Samajwadi Janata Party -who were part of the Janata Dal two decades back, had announced on April 15 that they would merge to form a national party.
