Ilaiyaraja’s National Award for ‘Thaarai Thapattai’ creates controversy

Written by : TNM

Music composer Ilaiyaraja on Monday bagged the National Award for Best Background Score for Thaarai Thapattai but the win was not without controversy.

There were many comments on Ilayaraja’s win because of a reported conflict of interest since his younger brother Gangai Amaren was part of the jury.

However, other jury members later clarified that Gangai did not vote for this particular category of awards and also did not take part in the final deliberation.

Interestingly, this was the maestro’s fifth National Award in the 1000th film of his career.

Thaarai Thapattai is directed and produced by director Bala and stars Sasikumar, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. The film is based on the ancient dance form Karakattam.
