Some of India’s premier technical institutions – the IITs – have made it to the top 100 on the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, but the data also shows that they remain male bastions. In comparison, general universities have more equitable student populations with Delhi University having an equal number of young women and men.

In its “BRICS & Emerging Economies” ranking of universities for 2016, IISc Bengaluru was the highest ranked Indian institution at number 16.

While its overall score is 42, the institution has been ranked highest on its industry income (52) and its biggest strength is research (47), followed by teaching (42.7) and citations (42.4). On international outlook, the institution has been ranked at 16.4.

A total of 16 universities, including some general universities made it to the THE rankings. Of these eight were IITs, and the rest general universities.

However, IISc Bengaluru and the eight IITs which made it to these rankings had a very poor female-male enrollment ratio. None of these institutions cross the 20 mark. For every 100 students, the number of female students has not crossed 19.
