Huge relief for Sun TV as AG gives consent for security clearance

Written by : TNM

In a relief to the Maran–owned Sun TV group, the Attorney General of India, Mukul Rohatgi has stated that the decision by the Centre to deny security clearance to Sun TV’s group of channels was an incorrect step. The move came after the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting sought Rohatgi’s opinion on the denial of clearance to 33 channels run by the Sun TV group, reported ET Now. Only last week, the Centre moved the Madras High Court appealing against a stay order on the cancellation of security clearance to Maran family –owned Kal Cable. Earlier this month the ET had reported that MHA had denied security clearance for the Sun TV network. After the AG’s opinion that clearance should be given to broadcast all 33 television channels , Sun TV responded stating that the company had done no wrong for the ministries to deny them security clearance. However, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy says the development was shocking. It is shocking that after the Home Minister declines security clearance to Sun TV, the AG gives a contrary opinion to the I&B, he says.He also says that he would approach the Supreme Court over the issue. The grounds for denial of security clearance for the channels was attributed to three pending criminal investigation cases against Sun TV and its chairman, Kalanithi Maran and his brother, former Union Minister, Dayanidhi Maran. It was following this that Kalanithi Maran wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh stating that the grounds for denying clearance was untenable.
