How much does an Indian household pay annually as bribe?That’s exactly what a government-commissioned study on unaccounted wealth found out and the results are not exactly pleasing.According to National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), an average urban household in the country pays Rs. 4,400 as bribe annually while rural households pay Rs. 2,900, reported Times of India. A survey conducted between September and December 2012, it was found that an average of Rs. 18,000 was paid for securing jobs and transfers with maximum bribes given for general work, admission and to police officials, said the report.Not just limited to urban areas, the report also revealed that half the beneficiaries of government schemes like the MNREGS , public distribution system,  social security programmes and scholarships had to pay money in order to make use of its provisions.The survey conducted across 359 households in UP, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtrat highlighted the extent of corruption. It also reported that based on sample survey of private contractors across 15 states, an average 9 per cent of the project cost is usually paid as bribe. It also pointed out that on an average those running roadside shops and eateries paid around Rs. 1100 per month. Using interviews conducted with retired government officials, the report also stated that public sector investment was an easy source for illegal funds for politicians. NCAER along with the National Institute of Public Finance & Policy and National Institute of Financial Management  have been provided with the tasks of providing estimates of black money, the reports for which were given to the finance minister in 2013- 14.
