As Jammu and Kashmir is still reeling from the recent floods that devastated the state, heavy rains in the northeast regions of the country have triggered flash floods in and around Assam and Meghalaya. According to reports, the flood has claimed the lives of 10 people and over eight lakh people have been affected by the floods.
Goalpara, Dhubri, Lakhimpur and Kamrup (Rural) district and Guwahati are said to be the worst hit areas, states a report by Zee News.
Following the critical situation, Assam’s Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the state government to carry out rescue and rehabilitation operations in the flood affected regions.
The army, Border Security Force (BSF), State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) are assisting in the rescue operations.
The report also states that a child was killed in a landslide, a person was electrocuted and another body was found floating on river Bharalu.
According to the Goalpara district Deputy Commissioner Preetam Saikia, 'Heavy rains in Goalpara coupled with that in neighbouring Garo hills of Meghalaya was causing the deluge to be intensified in the district'.
Educational Institutes in Kamrup district have been asked to remain closed keeping the flood situation in mind, reports The Hindustan Times. 'The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here predicted more rains in next 48 hours in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya', states the report published on Monday.
The social media has also been abuzz with the situation in north eastern India with many tweeting pictures and information related to the flood-affected regions.
