Notorious terrorist group ISIS has reportedly killed Ruqia Hassan making her the first female journalist to be killed in ISIS occupied Syrian territory.

ISIS informed Hassan’s family on Saturday that she was executed on charges of "espionage", Arab news channel Al-Aan TV reported. While the exact date of her execution is not known, according to a Syrian media organization, she is the fifth journalist be killed since October 2015.

Hassan was a student of philosophy at Aleppo University and later joined the opposition to the regime of Bashar al-Assad when the revolution began in Raqqa. She reportedly refused to leave the city when it became an ISIS stronghold.

Syria-based human rights group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS) believes that she was killed soon after her last posts on social media on July 21 last year, in which she mocked ISIS.

Abu Mohammed, founder of RBSS, tweeted on January 3 that Hassan's last words were, "I'm in Raqqa and I received death threats, and when Isis [arrests] me and kills me it's ok because they will cut my head and I have dignity its better than I live in humiliation with Isis [sic]"

Various media organization have reported that she was executed after her final posts on social network mocked ISIS for banning Wi-Fi hotspots in the city of Raqqa.

International media reported that Hassan was known as Nisan Ibrahim on social media. In one of her posts, Hassan had said in the local language:

"Go ahead and cut off our internet, our messenger pigeons won't complain.”
