Jayalalithaa continues to be on life support, and reports of her death are “false”, Apollo Hospital has clarified in a statement.

Following erroneously telecast news, Apollo Hospital has issued a clarification that reports of Jayalalithaa’s death are “false” and “baseless”. The hospital maintained that she continues to be on life support.

“Apollo specialists and specialist from the AIIMS are continually monitoring the honorable chief minister very closely.”

The statement said that the media reports were false. The hospital said: “They are advised to rectify this mistake based on this press release.”

Crowds of AIADMK supporters turned emotional, and even threw chairs for a short period when this news spread, forcing police to lathicharge.

The commotion started after Jaya TV, seen as the official mouthpiece of the AIADMK, flashed erroneously for a fleeting moment that Jayalalithaa had passed away. The news was immediately taken off. Following this, popular Tamil channels began to report the news. English media picked up on this.

Within minutes of the news spreading, the hospital tweeted a clarification and later issued a statement.

At the AIADMK office, the party flag was flown at half-mast for a few minutes. Some media houses reported on this. It was later flown at full mast.
