Cauvery verdict live blog: Tracking the SC decision and the response from TN and Karnataka

Written by : TNM Staff

The Supreme Court is all set to pronounce the verdict on the century-old dispute on the sharing of the Cauvery river water between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.

The verdict is eagerly awaited by farmer coalitions and political parties in all the states. Apart from serving as a source of drinking water, the river water is crucial to agriculturalists in Karnataka and TN.

In September 2017, the apex court had reserved its order on appeals filed by the three states against the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal final award in 2007.

The 765-km-long Cauvery river originates in Kodagu district’s Talacauvery in Karnataka and flows through Haasan, Mandya, and Mysuru districts before entering Dharmapuri, Erode, Karur, Trichy, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and other districts in Tamil Nadu. The river and its tributaries also flow through Kerala and Puducherry.

The SC's decision today is likely to have far-reaching political implications, too.
