In April 2014, over 270 girls from a school in Nigeria were kidnapped by the extremist organisation Boko Haram, which loosely translates to 'Western education is forbidden'.

Founded in 2002, the group drew international condemnation following the 2014 abductions of the school girls.

Apart from opposing western education, the group's "political goal was to create an Islamic state", states a report by the BBC.

A 2014 Washington Post reports that 'Since July 2009, when the Boko Haram conflict escalated, at least 11,100 people have died on all sides of the insurgency' making the Boko Haram insurgency as one of the most significant conflicts in the world. 'Nigerian casualties are now running more than double those in Afghanistan, and substantially higher than in Iraq just a few years ago', adds the report.

Vox recently published a video explaining what the Boko Haram and the unrest in Nigeria is, in less than three minutes. According to Vox, the violence in the region continues to escalate and 'Over 1 million people have been forced to flee their homes, just as Nigeria prepares for a general election'.
