The bifurcation of AP - a boon for the BJP?

Written by : TNM

Nitin B | The News Minute | December 20, 2014 | 7:55 pm ISTThe Andhra Pradesh state unit of the BJP, which is currently an ally and part of the TDP ruled state government, may soon break its ties with the TDP and go solo as part of its move to gain more foothold in the southern states.Though there is no official announcement, there is more than just speculation among party circles that the BJP may snap ties with the Naidu government to ensure independent growth in the state. The fact that the BJP is even considering this move, owes its roots to the various events that took place in the past year-mainly the bifurcation of the state which seems to have worked out quite well for the party. The state of Andhra Pradesh has seen quite some change in the year 2014. After the state witnessed continuous turbulence for over a year, demanding a separate state, with normalcy in the entire region coming to a complete standstill, it was finally bifurcated into Telangana and AP (to its pre 1956 state) on June 2 of this year after the Parliament cleared the AP Re-organisation Bill in February. The entire struggle saw the rise of two political parties, namely the TRS and the TDP. The TRS chief and Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, the main man behind the revival of the struggle for separate statehood, played his cards smartly. Sensing a void in Andhra Pradesh immediately after the chopper crash death of Y. S. Rajashekara Reddy in 2009, he upped the ante for a separate state.Read: KCR: Etching history with a brand of secessionist politicsThe struggle also gave a new lease of life to the TDP chief and AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu - who on the brink of political oblivion, struck back against the TRS ideology and spearheaded the movement for “Seemandhra”. Naidu who had previously served as CM (1995-2004) had a reputation as a “development man” after he established the entire IT sector in Hyderabad. The state which was a stronghold for the Congress, which ruled for over four decades in the 57 years of existence of Andhra Pradesh, saw it take a blow with the party not even managing representation in the Legislative Assembly of residuary Andhra Pradesh but managing to secure the post of main opposition party in Telangana. The biggest gainer in this entire geo-political scenario was the BJP. Till 2009, the BJP was a marginal player in the state of United AP. During the statehood struggle, the BJP was a supporter for a separate state of Telangana but after the announcement of the split, the BJP made a last minute crossover and decided to set foundation in Andhra Pradesh. The BJP, which was strongly riding on the Modi wave at the time, teamed up with the TDP and is now part of the ruling alliance in the state. However, latest reports suggest that the BJP may already be giving this proposal some serious thought. The BJP and the TDP have a mutual agreement with Naidu previously helping Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (BJP) get elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. The TDP in turn, is an alliance partner in the NDA-run central government.Analysts feel that this decision is also fueling the various Congress and the YSRCP party members to crossover to the BJP. “The BJP is very vocal in its approach while compared to the TDP” says T Ravi, a political analyst who feels that the BJP’s approach has helped it gain ground with the political vacuum left behind by the Congress in the state.“Even in Telangana, KCR has asked a few of his acquaintances and well wishers to put through a proposal about TRS joining the Modi government.” This could likely be viewed as a move to curb the growth of the BJP in the state, putting to rest the fears of the TRS.“It all basically comes down to be seen as to which social group the BJP would appeal to, to reassure their vote share in the state.” Ravi adds.In conclusion he says, “The decision to go solo by the BJP will not make any immediate political impact. It is a calculated, long term call that the party has to make and ensure that it retains influence in the state”Tweet
