The Board of Control for Cricket in India is planning to organize a shorter version of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at an undisclosed venue overseas, this year in September.

The tournament will include all the eight teams currently part of the IPL and will be played over a two-week period.

The format will be announced later, said BCCI president Anurag Thakur at a news conference after its working committee meeting on Friday.

"It will be a shorter format, not home and away matches but a lesser number of matches. In a two-week window we should be able to complete it," he said.

The BCCI move was on the cards with the scrapping of the Champions League T20 last year.

The details of the shortened version of IPL are yet to be chalked out and possible venues are US and UAE, which has already hosted part of the IPL in 2014.

“We have to speak to the franchises, broadcasters and look at the revenue model. Many countries are willing to host. We have to look at the various time zone (and decide) where we can take it. It will be an annual affair,” said Thakur.

The full-fledged IPL lasts about for almost two months.

The ninth edition of the tournament was held in India from April 9 to May 29.
