An Indian Army jawan from Andhra Pradesh’s Sri Sathya Sai district was killed in cross-border firing by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday night, May 8.

The jawan, identified as Murali Naik (25), hailed from Kalli Thanda hamlet in Puttagundlapalle village of Gorantla mandal. He was critically injured during heavy artillery and mortar fire initiated by the Pakistan Army following India’s Operation Sindoor. According to officials, efforts to airlift him to New Delhi for treatment were unsuccessful and he succumbed to his injuries.

Naik was the only son of Mudavath Sriram Naik and Mudavath Jyothi Bai, both of whom are agricultural labourers. He was unmarried and belongs to the Lambadi community, categorised as Scheduled Tribes.

Local police officials visited the bereaved family on Friday morning. “We salute Murali Naik’s bravery and dedication. His sacrifice will not be forgotten,” one officer said.

News of his death spread across the region, and residents from surrounding hamlets visited the family to offer condolences. His mortal remains are expected to arrive in Kalli Thanda on Saturday morning, May 10, for the final rites.

Meanwhile, the district administration is engaged in preparations for Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to the Sri Sathya Sai district on Friday. He is expected to announce ex gratia compensation for the family during the visit.
