Leading telecom player Bharti Airtel on Monday announced that its users in India would not have to pay any roaming charges across the country from April 1.

The company also said that users won’t be charged extra for data and they can use their home network data packs when they are on roaming network.

“This marks the death of national roaming and the whole country will now be like a local network for our customers, who will not have to think twice before making or receiving calls or using data while travelling outside their home base,” said Gopal Vittal, chief executive, Bharti Airtel.

Monday’s announcement came following a similar announcement by Reliance Jio last week.

For those on international roaming, the company announced that even without a pack, customers will not have to face “bill shocks” as they will be charged an automatic adjustment which will be equivalent to the daily pack of the country they are in.

“This means that the moment a customer’s billing reaches the price of a one-day pack for the country, he/she will be automatically moved to that pack. This will allow our customers to use their devices abroad without any fear,” the company said.

Last week, Airtel had also announced acquisition of Telenor India.
