After several Indian states imposed a ban on Nestle’s Maggi noodles, the UK have now exercised caution and have started investigating into Maggi packets being sold in Indian stores across the country.
According to a report in The Times of India, UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has received lab reports from India and is working with the European Commission to check if similar packets are in distribution in stores there.
The FSA, which is equivalent to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, is cautious over the high lead and MSG content. “The FSA is aware of the recent incident in India involving Maggi Noodles. We are currently working with Nestle and the European Commission to investigate a report of higher than expected levels of Lead and undeclared MSG in Maggi Noodles,” it told the newspaper in a statement.
They added that a team was investigating the matter in the UK and that they’ve been in touch with Nestle over the issue. An FSA official is quoted as telling the newspaper that Nestle UK have said that they import only one flavor of Maggi from India. He added that the batch that was tested in India was not found in the UK.
Nestle have said that they have tested close to 1000 batches of the product and an independent lab tested 600 too. Close to 12.5 crore packets have been reportedly tested.
