9 medium intensity earthquakes hit Nicobar Islands in a 2-hour span

Nine medium-intensity earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.7 to 5.2 on the Richter scale, hit the Nicobar Islands of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday morning, all in the span of two hours, a PTI report stated, quoting the National Centre for Seismology. No damage has been reported yet.

The Indian Meteorological Department also put out a series of tweets detailing the time, location and the magnitude of each earthquake.

The first jolt with a magnitude of 4.9 occurred at 5.14 AM, followed by another jolt with a magnitude of 5 a couple of minutes later. The third one, measuring 5 on the Richter scale,  was reported at 5.33 am. The fourth one, of magnitude 4.8, hit around 30 seconds later, at 5.53 am. The fifth one was reported at 6.04 am, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. The next one was at 6.19 am, of a magnitude 4.8. Then, an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck the islands at 06.28 am. The eighth quake was felt at around 6.41 am, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. The last jolt was recorded at 6.54 AM with a magnitude of 5.2.

All the earthquakes were recorded at a depth of 10 km. There have been no immediate reports of casualties as yet.

The Andaman and the Nicobar archipelago is prone to earthquakes. It is also not unusual for the islands to witness more than two-three quakes a day.
