Worst hailstorm in 25 years hits Wayanad, roads covered with thick ice for over 12 hours

Wayanad district of Kerala was hit by a huge hailstorm on Monday night, accompanied by the summer rain.

The fall of hailstones was severe in and around Sulthan Bathery area of the district.

After the hailstorm, the roads and rooftops of houses in the area were covered with thick ice that did not melt tillTuesday morning.

The district had been having mild hailstone fall since last week.

Minor hailstone fall is common in the district. However, reports say it was after 25 years that the district was witnessing such a heavy hailstorm. The hailstorm lasted for about an hour.

Following the torrent of hailstones, minor damage was reported to various cultivations in the district.

Another district where hailstorm is common is Idukki. The district has been witnessing hailstone fall almost every year.

Seven years ago, Idukki district had witnessed a severe hailstorm which caused massive loss to crops and damaged houses.

The 2010 hailstorm had damaged cardamom cultivation across 500 acres and destroyed 19 houses in the district.
