Will fireworks be allowed in Thrissur pooram? Final decision today

Written by : TNM Staff

Two days after the Thrissur district administration imposed regulations including use of low decibel crackers for the April 17 finale of iconic Pooram festival in Kerala, the ambiguity over the festival being conducted in its complete grandeur still remains.

A Ramachandran Pisharody, Secretary of Paramekkavu Devasom, Thrissur, said that both Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devasoms had met on Tuesday and decided that unless there is clarity on the rules pertaining to the conduct of pooram, fireworks display and Kudamattam will not be held.

"As of now, there has been no changes in the decisions taken at the meeting on Tuesday. We are yet to know the Government's stand on the issue and is expecting a confirmation by this afternoon," he added.

The safety measures proposed include use of low decibel crackers, keeping a 'huge distance' between the fireworks arena and spectators, and putting barricades besides more security at the famous Vadakkumnatha temple ground, the venue.

A special squad would be deployed to ensure safety of the spectators assembling in this temple town to watch the fireworks.

On Tuesday, the Kerala High Court also banned use of high-decibel fireworks in the night.
