The News Minute | August 27, 2014 | 10:00 am ISTIn January this year, a local court in Kollam, Kerala had ordered a DNA testing to settle a dispute. The DNA test was not to find the accused in a criminal case, but to settle a dispute over the ownership of a calf. The complainant named Geeta had alleged that the calf of her cow was held by Sashilekha, a woman living in her neighbourhood. The quarrel reached the court after Geeta filed a police complaint against Sashilekha and her son. With no other way to prove who the calf belonged to, the magistrate ordered a DNA test. Geeta even paid Rs 17000 for the DNA test which was conducted at the Rajeev Gandhi institute of Biotechnology. After months of waiting with bated breath, the results of the DNA test for establishing maternity are finally out. The complainant was proved wrong. The calf did belong to Sashilekha. And finally Kerala has a case of using DNA test to establish ownership of cattle.
