Two persons, said to be BJP supporters, were on Wednesday, arrested for allegedly setting ablaze the CPI(M)-run library near Tirur in Malappuram district, police said.

Furniture and books worth Rs 20 lakh were damaged in the fire that occurred during the wee hours yesterday at the AKG Memorial Library maintained by CPI-M, Tirur Circle Inspector T R Pradeep Kumar said.

Sathish (25) and Vinod (30), suspected to be BJP supporters, have been arrested under various IPC sections and produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate, Tirur, who remanded them to 14 days custody, the police official said.

The duo was later lodged at Tirur sub-jail, he added.

The attack on the library is suspected to be a fallout of a quarrel between the RSS and CPI-M workers on Monday evening over writing on a wall, Kumar said, adding probe is underway to ascertain exact cause of the arson.
