The inaugural ceremony of a National Service Scheme (NSS) camp held at a school in Thrissur district has left many fuming over the “cruelty” meted out to students during the programme. 

Instead of being hung on the wall, students of Government Higher Secondary School in Chavakkad were made to hold up a banner for one hour, the entire length of the ceremony.  

According to a complaint filed with Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Wednesday, two students were made to hold the two ends of the banner, which amounts to cruelty. 

In a photograph from the inaugural ceremony, one girl student can be seen holding one end of the banner, above her head. The other end, however, is not visible in the photograph. 

The complaint filed by A Prasad, state secretary of BJP's student wing ABVP, sought action against the organisers of the event including the school principal and the PTA President. A photograph of the incident has also been attached along with the complaint. 

Child Rights Commission member Babu told The News Minute that an enquiry will be carried out based on the complaint received by the commission.
