A man set fire to the ground floor of Neyyattinkara taluk office in Thiruvananthapuram district on Tuesday morning as his relief fund was being delayed.

Thirty-nine-year-old Sunil rushed to the office in the morning with a can of petrol and a matchbox. The security guards of Taluk office reportedly said that after setting fire, Sunil tried to roll over it in the corridor, but he was detained by the guards.

Nobody was injured in the incident. As per media reports, Sunil has been visiting the taluk office for the last one year to get his relief fund.

“Sunil first visited the office in May 2015. He visited the office around five times over the year to get the fund, but returned empty-handed each time, as Taluk officials told him his file had not reached them. However, this is not the way to show protest,” Neyyattinkara Sub Inspector Stephen told The New Indian Express.

Last April, another similar incident happened, where a man named Samkutty set fire to Vellarada village office, as he was fed up with the delay in mutation of the land owned by him. Mutation of a property refers to the transfer or change of title entry in revenue records of the local municipal corporation.

Samkutty had been frequenting the office for about three years and was always sent back by officials for silly reasons. Five officials were injured in that incident.
