SC cancels permission to conduct admission in 4 private medical colleges in Kerala

The Supreme Court on Monday cancelled the permission to conduct admissions for four private medical colleges in Kerala - Al Azhar College in Thodupuzha, DM Medical College in Wayanad, PK Das Medical College in Palakkad and SR Medical College in Thiruvalla. With this verdict, admissions to 550 seats, all of which had been filled during the mop-up counselling sessions in September, have been cancelled.

A bench led by Justice Arun Mishra cancelled the admission processes of these colleges after the Medical Council of India (MCI) moved the Supreme Court stating that these colleges have poor facilities on campus.

The Medical Council of India had initially denied permission to these four medical colleges. The management of these colleges then approached the Kerala High Court on August 30, which went on to give them permission to conduct the admission process.

The MCI then approached the Supreme Court against the admission processes conducted by the colleges, requesting the apex court to urgently consider their petition filed, denying these medical colleges the permission to conduct admission processes.

On September 5, the Supreme Court stayed the Kerala High Court’s order of allowing the four medical colleges to conduct the admission process.

During the mop-up counselling sessions held in September, admissions to almost all the seats in the four colleges had been completed and this verdict by the Supreme Court will be affecting not just the four medical colleges but also, all the students that had secured admissions to these colleges.
