Pesticides in vegetables row: Vijayakanth hits out at Kerala

Written by : TNM

Tamil Nadu DMDK leader and actor Vijayakanth has come down heavily on Kerala’s allegations that vegetables imported from Tamil Nadu are laden with pesticides.  Vijayakanth said that Kerala made the allegations against Tamil Nadu farmers because of the Supreme Court judgment in the Mullaperiyar issue which supported the argument of Tamil Nadu. He also asked for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s interference in the issue. "We also consume the same vegetables produced by our farmers. Nothing has happened to us, no health issues or deaths have been caused due to the consumption of Tamil Nadu vegetables," said Vijayakanth. He also alleged that Kerala was dumping its waste in Tamil Nadu.In May 20, 2015, the Commissioner of Food Safety in Kerala had sent a letter to the Agricultural Production Commissioner in Tamil Nadu stating that there was "indiscriminate use of pesticide in the vegetables cultivated in the State of Tamil Nadu". Kerala also set up a special authority to ensure that safety standards are met in the import of vegetables from Tamil Nadu.
