In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor, students from Kerala studying in conflict-affected border states have begun returning home.
Approximately 75 students pursuing higher education in central and state universities across Jammu, Rajasthan, and Punjab arrived at Kerala House in New Delhi between the night of May 9 and the morning of May 10. They are expected to return to Kerala via various flights and trains scheduled for later in the day.
The move comes amid heightened security concerns as hostilities continue, particularly in regions like Poonch. While drone and missile attacks launched by Pakistan have targeted parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, Indian Armed Forces successfully intercepted and neutralized these aerial threats, preventing heavy casualties. However, ground-level conflict in border areas remains ongoing.
In response to the situation, the Government of Kerala has opened a 24-hour control room at Kerala House in New Delhi to assist Malayali students and residents in the affected regions. The initiative was undertaken following directives from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The control room is headed by Additional Resident Commissioner Chetan Kumar Meena, in coordination with Controller A S Harikumar and Liaison Officer Rahul K Jaiswar.
The control room remains operational for any assistance and can be reached at 011-23747079.
The tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after a terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam on April 22, carried out by Pakistan-based militants. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the border. Pakistan’s counter-response has included drone and missile activity, intensifying concerns for civilians, especially those near the border.
