This Onam kuppi-kkalam, not poo-kkalam

Written by : TNM

The News Minute| September 9, 2014 | 11.45 pm ISTWith the Kerala government taking major strides to enforce prohibition in the state, drinkers are in deep despair. Renewal of hundreds of bar licenses was stopped and many more bars are going to be closed down in the state soon. The year 2023 has been set as the target to achieve cent percent prohibition. Every holiday, especially on festival days, bars in Kerala witness serpentine queues. This Onam was no exception. But, most probably, this may well be the last Onam where people can stand before bars to buy their favourite drinks. Making pookkalam is an important aspect of Onam celebration. Flowers (poo) are placed in different patterns which beautify every home during the Onam festival. To commemorate the last Onam celebration with liquor, a kuppi-kkalam (bottle) instead of poo-kkalam was made by drinkers in Chalakkudy of Thrissur district.
