Not all of the 326 evicted families of Maradu apartments will receive Rs 25 lakhs as interim compensation. Rather, the initial recompense will correspond to the cost of each apartment, according to a panel headed by Justice K Balakrishnan Nair.
It was earlier perceived by the residents that all of them would receive a temporary recompense of Rs 25 lakh as per the Supreme Court order. But the panel, appointed by SC to fix the recompense, stated that the compensation for the residents will correspond to the value of the apartments. If the cost of the apartment is less than Rs 25 lakhs, they will get an interim compensation that's commensurate with the cost of the apartment. If higher, they will receive Rs 25 lakhs as compensation.
326 families of four apartment complexes – Alfa Serene, Jains Coral Cove, H2O Holy Faith and Golden Kayaloram – were evicted based on a Supreme Court order which stated that the apartment buildings were constructed in violation of Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
The panel held its first meeting on Monday in Kochi. Claim petitions were filed by 19 residents of various apartments, out of which interim relief has been recommended by the committee for 14 owners whose documents were found to be in order.
The report accessed by TNM states that out of the 14 apartment owners for whom the temporary compensation has been recommended, only three have been assigned Rs 25 lakhs as their interim recompense. Four of the residents among this are from Golden Kayaloram, four from Alfa Serene and six from Jains Coral Cove.
As of now, the total amount of recompense to 14 families alone will amount to Rs 2.6 crores.
The panel will consider additional claim petitions on October 17.
As per sources, the panel also recommended that the builders of the four apartment buildings have been served notices asking to file a statement that shows the amount paid by flat owners to them.
As per the inconveniences pointed out by residents, the panel also decided to relax the norms for filing claim petitions. The residents will not be again required to file affidavits with the petitions.
Meanwhile, as per reports, Crime Branch has summoned notice to the builders of all the four apartment buildings for questioning.
