Microbes proliferate when moisture content in the atmosphere is high. The Kerala government had recently flagged off the Safe Kerala project to prevent the spread of communicable diseases during monsoon. Within days of the formal launch of the checking by the squads, 36 shops have been served closure notice and 40 cool bars have been asked to improve facilities, The Hindu reported. Notices have also been served by the Health Department to 90 hotels to immediately upgrade facilities to improve hygiene. Last monsoon, the Arabian delicacy – Shawarma, had been banned in some cities in the state because they were being prepared in highly unhygienic and unsanitary ways and had also led to the death of a boy.While the Health Department is taking all steps to avoid any hazard, few small-hotel owners have voiced their concern against the state government’s strict checks. They complain that it is not possible for them to provide high cost facilities to their customers in a village setting.
