In yet another reshuffle of the top police brass, DGP Mohammed Yasin has been appointed as the head of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB).

The post was left vacant after Nirmal Chandra Asthana moved to central service on deputation.

Mohammed Yasin is currently the head of the Crime Branch and will be replaced by Shaik Darvesh Saheb. Yasin joined the Indian Police Service in the year 1986.

Asthana was appointed as the director of the anti-corruption body in February and barely held the post for three months.

Asthana was appointed to the key post after it had been empty for almost a year. State Police Chief Loknath Behera had been holding the additional charge of the VACB head until Asthana’s appointment.

Senior IPS officer Jacob Thomas was earlier the director of the VACB until he was asked to go on leave on March 31, 2017 by the government.

The Kerala High Court, on a couple of occasions, has criticized  the government for keeping such a crucial post vacant. Jacob Thomas was removed from the post in March 2017. He  had to go on leave after the High Court remarked that he was acting beyond judiciary and legislative measures.

Thomas was to return to service on May 2, but extended his leave at the time. On June 19 when Jacob Thomas returned to service he was appointed director of the Institute of Management in Government (IMG).
